40-Hour Reading Requirement & In-Service Opportunities

  • Florida Administrative Code, Rule 6A-4.0051 requires the certification areas listed below to meet the 40-Hour Reading Renewal Requirement. The objective of this initiative is to ensure all educators delivering reading instruction are receiving current, effective, and research-informed training to bolster their practice. 
    • Reading (K-12)
    • Reading (Endorsement)
    • Prekindergarten/Primary Education (age 3 – Grade 3)
    • Primary Education (K-3)
    • Elementary Education (K-6)
    • Elementary Education (1-6)
    • Middle Grades Integrated Curriculum (Grades 5-9)
    • English (6-12)
    • English for Speakers of Other Languages (K-12) (Not required for ESOL Endorsement)
    • Exceptional Student Education (K-12)
       
  • Not all Reading Hours count towards this requirement. Rule 6A-6.053, F.A.C. provides the criteria for Reading Hours that will satisfy the renewal requirement:
    • “An educator whose certificate has a beginning validity date of July 1, 2020, or thereafter, must have earned at least two (2) college credits, forty (40) inservice points, or a combination thereof, in evidence-based instruction and interventions grounded in the science of reading per Rule 6A-6.053, F.A.C., specifically designed for students with characteristics of dyslexia, including the use of explicit, systematic, and sequential approaches to reading instruction, developing phonological and phonemic awareness, decoding, and implementing multisensory intervention strategies.”

Explore the menu below to see what course options are available to earn towards your 40-hour renewal requirement. The courses are organized according to their provider. Some courses are self-paced, others cohort based. Some classes can be taken individually, others must be taken in sequence. If you are having trouble determining which opportunity may be best for you, reach out to a Professional Learning Specialist for guidance.

 

All courses listed below should be accessed through the “MyPLC” application on ClassLink. The Course Sections reflect the current enrollment opportunities. 

  • Beacon Educator
    Beacon Educator is a third-party professional learning platform with a variety of classes to support your educational practice. Beacon offers coursework pathways for many Endorsements. Some courses are “self-paced,” listed as “Unfacilitated Modules.” Other courses are “Facilitated” by an instructor, which includes graded classwork. Some courses need to be taken in sequence, while others are avaiable as needed. These courses are available for CCPS educators.

  • The Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services (BEESS)

    The BEESS Portal to Professional Learning Alternatives offers a variety of free online courses for Florida educators that will increase their ability to respond to the needs of students with disabilities.

  • Educational Impact (EI)
    The courses below are availabe to CCPS teachers through the “MyPLC” app on ClassLink. Search the corresponding course code below and enroll in the section.You will be brought to the Educational Impact LMS, where you will work through each module at your own pace. When you complete the course, it will automatically populate onto your Professional Learning Transcript.

  • UF Lastinger
    The UF Lastinger Center for Learning offers coursework intended to help teachers earn their Reading Endorsement through the “Literacy Micro-Credentials” and the “Literacy Matrix.” The “Micro-Credentials,” and “Competency 2” count towards the 40-Hour Reading Renewal Requirement.

  • FCCR Reading Endorsement

    This pathway to the Reading Endorsement occurs in person and covers Competencies 1 through 5 over the course of one school year. Participants must take all 5 competencies as a bundle. The course modules cannot be separated. FLDOE mandates attendance at 90% for course completion.
