Charlotte County, Fla. – Charlotte County Public Schools announces James Vernon as the new principal of Port Charlotte High School. A veteran educator with more than 20 years of experience in the district, Vernon steps into the role as part of the district’s continued focus on increased academic rigor and student success.
Vernon earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Florida State University and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University. He began his career in education as a teacher at Murdock Middle School before serving as athletic director at Port Charlotte High School.
For the past 11 years, he has held leadership roles at Deep Creek Elementary School, serving as both assistant principal and principal.
“Charlotte County has been my home for 44 years, and returning to Port Charlotte High feels like a full-circle moment,” Vernon said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to give back to the school and community that shaped me, and I’m excited to help mentor the next generation with the same heart and leadership that once guided me. I carry with me the belief that attitude reflects leadership — a mindset I look forward to bringing to PCHS.”
“Mr. Vernon has a clear vision for building strong systems that support both student outcomes and strong school culture,” Vianello said. “He’s deeply invested in our schools and our community, and we’re confident he’ll lead Port Charlotte High with integrity, purpose, and high expectations.”
Vernon will officially begin his new role on June 4, 2025, in preparation for the 2025–2026 school year.
