Charlotte County Public Schools Expands Passive Alert K9 Partnership with Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office to Enhance Campus Safety

Charlotte County, FL (November 6, 2024) —

Charlotte County Public Schools (CCPS) is pleased to announce the expansion of its passive alert K9 program in collaboration with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office and K9 Mila. This expanded partnership will increase random K9 walkthroughs across CCPS campuses, with visits occurring more frequently to help maintain a safe and secure learning environment for students and staff. CCPS expects this program to begin in November.

The passive alert K9 unit, trained to detect prohibited substances and provide a non-intrusive security presence, will perform random walkthroughs in middle and high schools districtwide. The increased frequency and unpredictability of these visits aim to deter contraband and promote a culture of safety, helping students feel more secure on school grounds.

“Our partnership with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office is built on a shared commitment to making safety a top priority,” said Superintendent Mark Vianello. “Together, we are dedicated to creating a secure, supportive environment where students and staff can focus on their success and future, knowing their well-being is our highest concern.”

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office will continue to use highly trained K9s capable of detecting a range of substances while remaining passive and non-threatening to students and school staff. Schools will be chosen at random and without prior notice. Through this program, CCPS aims to educate students on the importance of campus safety, instilling in them a greater sense of responsibility and respect for their school communities.

“There is nothing as critical as the safety of our youth, and K9 Mila provides another approach to help us maintain that level of security. Her presence will help to protect not just the students, but also the faculty and staff on each middle and high school campus. It is my sincere hope that Mila never has to provide an alert; but if she does, we will take appropriate action in collaboration with our partners at CCPS to ensure the issue is handled with expedience and everyone remains safe,” states Sheriff Bill Prummell.

This expansion aligns with Charlotte County Public Schools’ strategic plan, which emphasizes creating a safe and supportive environment for all students, ensuring their well-being as a foundation for academic success.
