Hello Cougar Leaders! This is Mrs. Hazeltine with our weekly school connect call.

This past week was bright as we celebrated COLOR WEEK with Kindergarten cougars! Thank you to all families that joined in the fun and supported the learning happening in our kindergarten classrooms. That is most definitely the cougar way!

Looking forward to this week, our challenge for Bully Prevention is to STAND UP for Others and don’t be a bystander. When you see someone being bullied, be brave and STAND UP for them. Bullies have been known to back off when others stand up for victims. If you don't feel safe, then get the help of an adult immediately. Be part of the solution -- not the problem! We are challenging students to participate by creating positive messages on post-its and handing them out to students at school.

Our cougar leaders are still doing an amazing job of wearing masks in the building. This important safety measure is implemented for any student or visitor that is on our campus. Help us by making sure your child is putting on their mask before exiting the car. This is important! Also, if a mask is forgotten we do have extras on hand! However, we have been using many of our extra masks these past two weeks. So double check and ensure that your child is coming to school with a mask. Lastly, with this hot weather, a great idea is to have extra masks in your child’s backpack.

We proudly announce Free Book Friday with our Family Reading Experience! Please join us on Fridays for FREE books delivered to your car at Parent Drop Off, starting this Friday October 16, 2020!

Finally, there is school on Monday, October 12th.  We look forward to seeing all our cougar leaders in the morning!

Thank you and have a great evening. Goodbye!

Hello Cougar Leaders! This is Mrs. Hazeltine calling with our weekly phone call.
Our cougars are really getting into a great instructional routine. Mrs. Kelch and I are seeing so many amazing learning opportunities happening in our building. We are proud of all our cougar leaders and the effort that we see in our instructional environment! Furthermore, our cougars are following our Always be Proud to Lead expectations. The Always be Proud to Lead expectations can be found on our website, Facebook, and other social media accounts. These expectations can be reviewed and used at home as well!

This week, we are calling all dads, grandpas, uncles, and other super cool dudes! Dads Take Your Child to School Day will look a little different this year, but instead of canceling our event, we decided to make it a “drive-through”! On Wednesday, September 30th, drive your children to school during regular drop off times and receive a treat bag with some gifts of appreciation to celebrate this special day. Thank you for your flexibility with this year’s event. We hope to see all dads, grandpas, uncles, and other super cool dudes on Wednesday!

Finally, please remember that rainy day dismissal can be called at a moment’s notice. As soon as the school receives an alert that lightening is within 10 miles of the school, we must go to rainy day dismissal. Please remember we have these procedures in place for the safety of all our families, students, and staff members. During rainy dismissal, all bikers and walkers should be picked up in the front of the building with a parent pick up card. If you do not have a parent pick up card, you’ll be asked to park, walk into the lobby with a mask on and show your ID. The expectation is that all students are picked up before 3:40pm. If you have a person meeting your walker or biker, please make sure it is communicated with them when the school calls the rainy-day dismissal.
We're looking forward to another great week!

Thank you and have a great evening! Good-bye.

Good afternoon Cougar Leaders,
This is Mrs. Hazeltine with an important announcement. I am calling to let all of our families know that we conducted a practice Active Assailant Drill at our school this morning. An Active Assailant Drill is when we immediately place the whole school in a complete lock down and all classroom doors are locked. In order to be prepared for any emergency that could possibly arise, we will be conducting these Active Assailant Drills monthly. A call will not be issued for every drill that we conduct, but we wanted to contact you on the first drill in case questions did arise when your children returned home this afternoon. Your child's safety is always important to us and we want to make sure we are prepared for an actual emergency. We strive to keep all of our students safe and happy in their classrooms. If you have any questions feel free to contact us. We hope that you have a great week. Thank you for your continued support. Goodbye!

Hello Cougar Leaders this is Mrs. Hazeltine with a very sensitive and important message. Our beloved principal, Ms. Johnston passed away on August 3, 2020.  We wanted to share this information with all parents and ask that you speak to your students about this sensitive topic. We will be dedicating a bench in her memory in the near future. If your student would like to talk to anyone about Ms. Johnston's passing, please let us know. We have staff members on our campus that are willing and ready to help students deal with this sensitive information. Thank you and have a good evening.

Hello Cougar Leaders!

This is Mrs. Hazeltine with this week’s announcements.

We have just a few reminders about arrival and dismissal. First, please do not drop students off before 8am. Students standing outside in the mornings are unsupervised and this can create an unsafe environment. Please have students wait in cars until you see staff members on duty. Please remind bikers and walkers of this safety procedure. The walker gates do not open until 8am and it is unsafe for them to be sitting outside the gate. Starting at 8am we will have adults on duty to help students get in the building and to the correct location.

Next, please remember that when you drive on campus be aware of your surroundings, do not park in cross walks and keep music at a low volume. If you need to park or walk students up to the building, please wear a mask or face covering at all times.

Finally, if you forget your Parent Pick-Up card, you’ll be asked to park and go into the school to show your ID. This procedure is for anyone picking up students. This procedure is the same for walkers in Pre-K, Kindergarten and First Grade. Walker cards must be visible, if not the student will go back to office and parent will need to come show ID. During rainy day dismissal walkers and bikers will be held in the building. Parents can come through the parent-pick line in the FRONT of the building to pick up your walkers and bikers when rainy day dismissal is called. Our dismissal is going very well. We are super proud of our cougar leaders. Thank you, parents, and guardians, for adhering to all procedures.

This past week, we had successful PTO and SAC meetings. We will be sending home more information on PTO and SAC. Please fill out the forms if you’re interested in taking a more active role in our school through these two awesome opportunities.

It has been wonderful to see our Cougar Leader back in our building. Everyone is working hard to keep each other safe by wearing their masks correctly and social distancing to the greatest extent possible. It has been so good to see students learning, leading, and laughing.  The school is bustling with positive energy, and we are so enjoying having our Cougars back in school.

Thank you for your support! Enjoy the rest of your evening. Goodbye.

If you do not have a parent pick up card, you will need to park, come into the building, and show your Identification to obtain one. Thank you in advance for your patience as we try to dismiss all our students safely.

Hello Kingsway Cougars. This is your principal, Mrs. Kelch We had a great first week of school. We can't thank each of you enough for helping make our first week of school run so smoothly! Kingsway Cougar Staff members did an amazing job as they navigated a safe learning environment in all areas of our school. Students are still learning new procedures, but are quickly adapting to wearing masks and embracing social distancing to the greatest extent possible. Together this has created a great start in our journey on the road to success.
This week, students were introduced to our Always be Proud to LEAD expectations. L-Lead by example. E-Earn respect and respect others. A-Act responsibly. D-Do your best! These expectations provide the building blocks to a learning environment that support positive behaviors. Please see the LEAD expectations on our school’s Facebook, website, and Twitter.
Thank you for being patient during Parent Pick-up. We will continue to get faster as we doing our best to get students home in a safe and orderly manner. Just a few reminders about dismissal: As you move through the line please pull close to the car in front of you, pay attention to your surroundings, and do not park in crosswalks. Please make sure you have you have the correct Parent Pick-up card displayed in your car. The staff members on duty will check this card before placing the student in your car. Once your student is in your car please take down the Parent Pick-Up card. This signals to us that you are ready to move. The whole line will move as one. This is to ensure that all students loading into cars are safe before traffic moves. If you forget your Parent Pick-Up card, you’ll be asked to park and go into the school to show your ID. Walkers- please remember to bring your walker card for students in Pre-K, Kindergarten, and First grade.
We will be starting our Beginning of the Year assessments Tuesday. Please make sure students are well rested and prepared to work hard to show what they know.
Looking ahead, our first SAC meeting is September 15th at 6:00 pm. Immediately following will be our first PTO meeting at 6:30 pm. Both will be held virtually on Google meets. A link will be posted this week to our social media pages.
As always, thank you for your continued support. We hope everyone has a great week.

Today was a GREAT day! It was so nice to be back in the building with our Cougar leaders! Feel free to share your child's first day of school picture below and what their favorite part of the day was! 💙🤍
Hello Kingsway Cougars,
This is your Principal, Mrs. Kelch
We had an amazing first day back to school. It was so awesome to see most of our Cougar Leaders on campus. We cannot wait to meet the second set of our Kindergarten students tomorrow. Thank you so much for your patience during our dismissal time. It is so important to us to ensure the safety of our students. Please remember to always have your PPU card visible. If you do not have your PPU card, you will be asked to park, go into the building and show your identification. You will not be able to enter the lobby of the school, as we will be dismissing our other students. In this case, please be patient with us as you wait. If you have a parent pick up tag, display it on your rear-view mirror until your child gets in the car, when your child is in the car safely, please remove it. This signals to us that your car is all set! We check IDs to maintain that approved persons are picking up our students and that we have a safe and secure campus. Our PPU line usually will end at about 3:40, but the first week or so it may take longer as we get into a routine. Again, please be patient and follow all dismissal procedures.
Also, please be careful when entering and exiting our campus. We have a new gate out in the front of our school. This gate should be open during arrival and dismissal times. We have one gate for entering campus and the other gate for exiting campus. In order to exit the campus, please pull all the way up to the exit gate to trigger it to open.
A few notes for the rest of the week. Students should be dropped off no earlier than 8:00 am on campus. Our School Resource Officer will be outside reminding families that only students enrolled in morning KEEP can arrive prior. If your child is NOT eating breakfast, please arrive after 8:10. Students need to be in class and ready to learn by 8:40. Pre-K teachers will be outside at parent drop off at 8:10 to assist with the arrival of your Pre-K child. All students should be dropped off in the parent drop off line, as parents will not be able to come into the building. Kindergarten families, if you are going to be participating in our second day of Kindergarten Drive Through Drop Off, please pull on to our bus ramp between 9:00-9:30. Our Kindergarten teachers will be outside and ready to take a picture with your child for their first day. We do ask that you remain in your cars. If your child attended Kindergarten today then do not attend tomorrow. If your child did not attend today they come tomorrow. All Kindergarten students will attend on Wednesday.
If your child is changing their dismissal at all this week. It is critical you write a note in your child's planner. Teachers will be checking the planner each day so this is the best way to document a dismissal change. Please note if this change is for one day or a permanent change.
Thank you again for an amazing first day! We will continue to work together for the success of all of our Cougar Leaders! As always, thank you for your continue support. We appreciate all that you do!

Phone Message Sent August 30th:
Good Evening Kingsway Cougar Leaders. This is Mrs. Kelch, your principal. We are so excited to welcome our Kingsway Cougars tomorrow! I have a lot of information for you to start the school year, remember a copy of this message will be posted to our Kingsway Facebook page!
Kindergarten students whose last names start with A-H will start school on August 31st. Students in kindergarten whose last names begin with I-Z will attend their first day of school on Tuesday, September 1st. Kindergarten parents please remember this is a staggered start. If your child attends on Monday, they do not attend on Tuesday. If your kinder student is schedule to attend on Tuesday you do not attend on Monday. Finally, all kindergarten students will attend school on September 2. Kindergarten students in Ms. Ulrich's and Ms. Dumont's will attend starting tomorrow, August 31st-they will not have a staggered start. Cougar Leaders will be arriving on the bus and others will be dropped off at parent drop off. Either way, please make sure your student is wearing their mask when they arrive on campus.
I have a few important reminders for our first day of school. Students who are eating breakfast can arrive on campus at 8:00, they will eat breakfast in the cafeteria and be dismissed to their hallways at 8:10. Therefore, we ask if your student is not eating breakfast that they do not arrive on campus until 8:10 so they can head straight to their classroom. Students cannot exit their cars at parent drop off until 8:00am unless they are enrolled in our morning KEEP program. Our School Resource Officer and administrators will be at the parent drop off to remind parents of this. It is unsafe to have students on campus prior to school arrival at 8:00. If your child is a walker, please ensure their route allows for their arrival after 8:00am. All students should be ready to learn in their classrooms by 8:40.
Kindergarten families, if you are going to be participating in our Kindergarten Drive Through Drop Off, please pull on to our bus ramp between 9:00-9:30. Our Kindergarten teachers will be outside and ready to take a picture with your child for their first day. At this time, please take a quick picture with your child and their teacher. We do ask that you remain in your cars. If your child is arriving at our regular drop off time, we will ensure they are escorted to their classroom.
Please remind your child that when they arrive to school that we will have several adults that will have class lists and will be able to help find their new classrooms. Last week all teachers contact their families to find out how each child will be going home. If you did not get in contact with your child’s teacher, please write a note so we know how your child will be going home. If there are ANY changes in how your child is going home, we ask that you write it in their planner, as we are not able to take changes over the phone.
You will also notice that we have a new gate at the front of our school this year. This gate will be open in the mornings until the conclusion of morning drop off. Once the gate closes, if you visit the campus you will need to pull up to the gate and ring the doorbell located on the pole. When the front office staff member answers you will need to state your name and your reason for visiting the campus. The gate will open and you will be able to park. You will then need to ring the second doorbell at the office door and show your identification. In the afternoons, the gate will be open at 2:00 pm to allow our parent pickup to begin forming. Please do not arrive before 2:00 or block the gate entrance as we will still need to allow visitors to enter our campus. In order to exit the campus, please pull all the way up to the exit gate to trigger it to open.
Our school begins dismissal procedures at 3:10 pm. Please see the dismissal letter that was sent via remind on Friday. A copy of this letter will be coming home this week as well. Please know that our primary goal for the first week of school is to dismiss all of our students safely. We will need you to have a little bit of patience and understanding with us as we make sure that all of our students get home safely. If you were unable to pick up a parent pickup card from us last week, you will be asked to park in the lot and show your identification. You will not be able to enter the lobby of the school, as we will be dismissing our other students. In this case please be patient with us as you wait. If you do have a parent pick up tag, display it on your rear-view mirror until your student gets in the car, when your child is in the car, please remove it. This signals to us that your car is all set! We have adjusted our PM walker dismissal. We now have only two locations to pick up walkers. Swamp side walkers will be dismissed at the small gate in front of our school. The Bus side walkers will be walked to the cross walk and dismissed from there. Kindergarten and first grade students will need a guardian present with a walker tag. If no guardian or no walker tag are present, the student will be escorted back to the office and guardian will be expected to show ID to pick up child in the office. We will not dismiss any walker to parked cars. If you want to pick up your child by car- please go through PPU.
We also want to share with you, your child will receive a breakaway lanyard on the first day of school. This lanyard will attach to your child’s mask to allow them to wear their mask to and from lunch and take their mask off while eating. Lanyards will stay at school and attach to the new mask your student wears each day. If you would like your child to have a lanyard for breakfast as well, you are welcome to send them to school with one. Lastly by the end of the first week of school, you will also notice a dismissal tag on your child’s backpack. We will be placing bar codes on all students’ backpacks to eliminate students touching the pin pad for lunch and for signing in and out of the office. Please keep this tag secure on your child’s backpack and let your child’s teacher know if your child needs a new one.
We know this is a lot of information and appreciate your listening. A copy of this phone message will be posted on our Kingsway Facebook page. Tomorrow is going to be a great day, we can’t wait to start the 2020-21 school year with our Cougar Leaders.

Our school hours are 8:10-3:10. The front doors do open at 8 for any child who needs to eat breakfast before going to class at 8:10. You can not drop your child off before 8, as they will be outside unattended and this is a safety concern. If you need to drop your child off before 8 you will need to register them in our before school program called KEEP. Classroom doors open at 8:10 this year. Students can eat breakfast until 8:35. The late bell rings at 8:40. Dismissal will start promptly at 3:10. We do ask that you are patient this first week as it may take longer than usual. We will be posting dismissal procedure letters on our social media accounts by Friday.

As always, thank you for your continued support. We appreciate you and all that you are doing. We are very excited to see your child and get the school year started! We are ready and know they are too! Have a great evening.

Message About Charlotte Virtual
An important message below from Charlotte Virtual School sent Wed. August 12th.
“Good evening, this is Dan McIntosh, Assistant Director at CTC, calling with information regarding Charlotte Virtual School. This message is very important for ANYONE interested in full time Charlotte Virtual School. If you have already completed ALL of the steps including the Orientation Agreement Form, you will receive a separate call with more information. Many students who expressed interest via our CVS application, have not completed all of these steps and are as a result, not fully enrolled in CVS. Please go to the Charlotte Virtual School Website, easily accessible from the Charlotte County Public School website at yourcharlotteschools.net and complete the following steps:
Step 1: Watch the orientation video (located on the home page)
Step 2: Click on the link: "What's next after orientation?" On the last slide of this document, there is a Orientation Agreement Form to complete. This MUST be done in order to finalize your intent to sign up for full time CVS.
Step 3: Create your Virtual School Account (If you already have an FLVS account, please do NOT create a new account.)
Step4: Finally, Watch the Welcome Virtual Call for your grade level.
You are NOT enrolled until all 4 steps have been completed. These steps are listed in order on the CVS website.
If after you watch the orientation video and the welcome call video and you decide that Charlotte Virtual is not the educational platform that will best fit the needs of your child, please complete the orientation agreement and simply check NO for the response to the last question. This will notify us to move your child back to the zoned brick and mortar school from which they came.
We are asking that if you have already applied for Charlotte Virtual School that you complete these 4 steps as soon as possible so that we can begin creating your child's schedule. If after midnight on August 21st, you have not finalized the process through completion of the orientation agreement, you will be re-registered at your zoned brick and mortar school. Thank you for listening.”

Welcome Mrs. Hazeltine!

Hello Kingsway Cougars:

My name is Mrs. Melody Hazeltine and I am so excited to be joining the amazing leadership team at Kingsway Elementary as your Assistant Principal. I would like to take a few moments to introduce myself.

This is my fifteenth year in Charlotte County Public Schools (CCPS). I spent eleven of those years in the classroom teaching first grade, second grade, fourth grade and fifth grade.  For the past four years, I had the privilege and great experience of serving as the Lead Teacher at another elementary school.

I grew up in Charlotte County and graduated from Lemon Bay High School as a proud Manta Ray! After graduating college, I returned to Charlotte County to pursue my dream of bettering our community by serving as an educator. I married a Port Charlotte High School Pirate, Mr. Jamie Hazeltine, in 2009. We now have four amazing children following our footsteps in CCPS. I love living in this community. I enjoy going to the beach, reading books, volunteering and watching movies. Also, I enjoy playing cards and board games. I am fiercely competitive and enjoy a good challenge.

I am truly honored to be given this opportunity to lead as a Kingsway Cougar. I was at Kingsway early in my career and I’m excited to be back again. I know this school is full of talented students, teachers, and staff members.  I look forward to partnering with each of you as I learn more about the Kingsway Elementary School families. Please contact me with any ideas you would like to share and/or questions you may have as we work together to provide a safe, student-centered learning environment that empowers students to become responsible, lifelong learners.

Proud to Lead,

Mrs. Hazeltine

Congrats Mrs. Forbus!

#MaskUpKES

Kingsway Elementary School is encouraging the entire KES Community to #maskupKES!

Be ready for the first day of school on August 31st!  Practice wearing your mask now.  Start with 1 hour per day and add another hour each week.  Add in short breaks when necessary as the time period grows.

Masks, buffs, and gaiters need to be school appropriate and follow the CCPS dress code policy.

Show us your child is getting ready for school by posting a picture of your child in a mask on social media and tag it with #maskupKES.

Practice wearing your mask these next few weeks. :-) You can do it! We're in this together!!!

Masks: Please follow our dress code for masks. They must be appropriate.

New School Start Date

Earlier today at an Emergency School Board Meeting due to the continued rise in cases of Covid-19, the School Board approved to delay the start of school for students until August 31, 2020.  The CCPS Calendar Committee will be immediately convened to quickly work on the school calendar for 2020-2021.

In addition, at the same meeting, the following recommendation was approved by the School Board:

  • All students, staff and individuals must wear masks / face coverings on school property to the maximum extent possible effective July 22, 2020 until further notice. This includes schools, district office buildings and busses.

Later this week we will place on the District Website, health and wellness protocols that CCPS will be following that were created in conjunction with the Health Department.

Options for the 2020-2021 School Year

Kingsway Families,

We hope you are all staying safe and doing well this summer. Charlotte County Schools shared a press release with the student options for the upcoming school year this week. To learn more about the three options available please go the the district webpage (https://www.yourcharlotteschools.net) and click on the link "Plan for the 20/21 school year". Please note that the original press release mistyped our start date, we do in fact start on August 10th.

The district and school leadership teams are working to finalize guidelines and protocols for our students returning to brick and mortar. These plans will be shared within the next few weeks. If you are considering virtual school or home school please read the information below.

Charlotte Virtual School:
Charlotte Virtual School now has elementary options. The option to do virtual school through Charlotte Virtual is nothing like I Ready. This is a rigorous and extensive curriculum which requires parent engagement with students. Students will be considered truant if students do not abide by their weekly pace charts.
There is an application on the Charlotte Virtual Website at https://www.yourcharlotteschools.net/domain/4536.
We encourage you to go to this website, read through the information provided, especially the FAQ and review the curriculum for which your child will follow. This is probably the most important thing you can do before making a final decision. Once you make a decision, please complete the application. Once you complete the application, you will receive an email shortly thereafter with additional instructions.
Once the application has been completed, your student will be withdrawn from their zoned school and placed into the Charlotte Virtual School. Once enrolled into Charlotte Virtual School, all parents and students will have to participate in a virtual orientation and commit to the conditions of enrollment. There is a 21 day grace period for which a student can return to their zoned school.”

Home Education:
If you are interested in home education, the most important thing you need to know is that you will be withdrawing your student from Charlotte County Public Schools and taking on the responsibility of educating your children with your curriculum of choice.

Good evening Kingsway families,

This is Mrs. Kelch with some important announcements.

Happy last week of school. Summer is right around the corner. Please make sure your child continues their e-learning until May 28th.

Looking ahead, we have a busy week with many fun events. As stated last week, May 27th, from 9-11 am, is our 5th grade promotion ceremony. Parents, please drive thru the bus side PPU (on Alward street) first to drop off school belongings- Chromebooks, MiFi’s, teacher items, Family Reading Center books and library books. Please make sure you wipe down and disinfect our Chromebooks. After doing so, you will drive thru the front PPU line to retrieve your child’s belongings, awards and promotion certificate.  Feel free to decorate your car and hold up signs. Staff members will be lined up to share this special event with you and your child. We do ask that you stay in your car at all times. We will hand belongings back to you and retrieve belongings from you through your car windows. We can’t wait to see our future 6th graders!

Kindergarten through 4th grade will receive their belongings on May 29th. Just like 5th grade, you will enter the bus side PPU line first to drop off any school belongings. Then you will enter the front PPU to receive your child’s belongings. Pre- K and Kindergarten, 8:00-9:00. First Grade, 9:30-10:30. Second Grade, 11:00-12:00. Third Grade, 12:30-1:30. Fourth Grade, 2:00-3:00. If you have multiple children in different grade levels you can choose which time you would like to come. We do ask that you communicate that to your child’s at teacher so we can have all their belongings together. If you do not come at your child’s set grade level time they will not see their teacher. Teachers will be present at their grade level time only. This is definitely not the way we wanted to end our school year, but we are excited to see our students one last time before summer.

Yearbooks did arrive. If you would like to purchase one they will be sold on the bus side PPU line for $15.00 Please bring exact cash or write a check to Kingsway Elementary School.

We are still issuing refunds for various events and fundraisers. We did send out refunds for Pine River. If you need the invoice slip that states what was sold, to who, and how much, feel free to call Ms. Dorothy in the front office. We appreciate everyone’s patience as it is a lengthy process.

Our virtual KEEP application is open. KEEP is our before and after school program. We have posted the link and introduction letter on Facebook, Twitter and on our website. This does not guarantee you a spot, but allows you to add your name to the list. This week is for new students who wish to enroll.  After this week, we will review the document and finalize the list. We will then contact you directly to finalize the KEEP application process.

Student report cards will be published to the FOCUS portal on Monday, June 8.

I can't thank everyone enough for your hard work, patience and flexibility during virtual learning.  We're sad to say goodbye, but looking forward to starting a new school year with all of you.  Congratulations to our students and way to go!  I cannot wait to meet all of our families and hope everyone has a great summer.

Remember to keep looking at our website and social pages (Facebook and Twitter) for up to date information.  Stay healthy and remain safe!

Good evening Kingsway families,

This is Mrs. Kelch, your new principal, with some important announcements. First off, thank you for the warm welcome. I am excited to meet all of our Kingsway families. I am looking forward to an amazing school year together. I hope you and your family are doing well. Please remain safe and healthy.

I would like to share some updates for Kindergarten round up for the 2020-2021 school year. Online Kindergarten registration will be available this Monday, May 4th, by accessing the CCPS District website or by accessing Kingsway’s website. The online registration application does not replace the formal registration process for all new incoming kindergarten students; however, completing the online application will provide the District and each school with the information we need to begin the registration process. Once CCPS can designate days for onsite registration, we will contact you directly using the contact information you provide after completing the onsite registration application. We will also post the onsite registration dates on the district website and on our school’s website. Please make sure you visit the district website or Kingsway’s website frequently for Kindergarten Registration updates. Remember, the online registration application for new incoming Kindergarten students will be available on the District and on our school’s website beginning Monday, May 4th.

Next week is staff appreciation week. We have created a PowerPoint that we will share on Monday that gives your child the ability to say thank you to their teacher. This Powerpoint will be shared on Facebook and on our website. Each day states a different way to show appreciation. For instance, Monday is Music Monday. Anything they make or design can be sent directly to their teacher’s email. Teachers will be pleasantly surprised to get these emails. I know they will cherish every email they receive. These sweet gestures from your child will make their day. I know they miss seeing your child’s smiling face. Thank you in advance for participating in this years’ staff appreciation.

Again, I look forward to a rewarding and successful year together. As always, we appreciation your endless support. Have a great weekend!

Good Evening Kingsway Cougars,

This is your Assistant Principal, Mrs. Forbus.

As I am sure you are all aware, school is officially closed for the school year.

Although this is certainly the safest decision, it is sad to know that we will not return for the school year. We miss coming to Kingsway and seeing our students every day.

Now that the decision has been made, we will need to re-evaluate how we will handle a few things such as yearbooks, refunds, and 5th grade students receiving their belongings.

Please know that we will be discussing these items and will have updates for you by the end of the week. Do keep in mind that in order to follow the guidelines, everything is on hold until the stay at home order has been lifted.

At this point and time, I encourage you to continue any safety precautions you have had in place, and to continue the progress you have all been making during this time of E-Learning. Remember to check our school website for your weekly e-learning updates, district and school announcements, and fun activities from your specials teachers:)

You are all in my thoughts, and I am proud of the positive things I am hearing from your teachers.

As always, thank you for your continued support and have a nice evening.

Phone Message Sent April 12th

Good Evening Kingsway Cougars,

This is your Assistant Principal, Mrs. Forbus.

I hope you all have had a relaxing three day weekend:)

I want to let you know how incredibly proud we are of our Kingsway students. You all are doing a really great job with E-Learning.
Families, we also want to thank you, as we know our students are succeeding because of your effort and support during this time!

Please remember that you can find grade level information and resources on our Kingsway webpage.

I want to take a moment to address a few things that required collecting money as we approached the last quarter of the school year.

Pine River Candy Fundraiser: I have been in contact with this company, and will have a final resolution this week. I will communicate the decision with families as soon as possible.
Yearbooks: As soon as we are able to open the school building, we will schedule a day for students to come and receive their 2019/2020 yearbooks.
Fifth Grade field trip: As soon as we are able to open the school building, we will issue refunds for those that have already paid.

We appreciate your patience as we navigate through this unforeseen situation.

We look forward to another successful week of E-Learning and being another week closer to returning to the school building with our students!

As always, thank you for your continued support and have a nice evening!

Phone Message Sent April 5th

Good Evening Kingsway Cougars,

This is your Assistant Principal, Mrs. Forbus.

We are so proud of all the hard work our Kingsway students placed into their first week of virtual learning and we hope everyone is staying healthy and well.

Families, We have placed an E-Learning tab on our school website (www.kingswayonline.net). If you are accessing the school website from your phone you will find the E-Learning resource under the "Menu" option.

Here you will find the CCPS Instructional continuity plan, tech support, several parent resources, and most importantly grade level weekly updates.

We decided to place a checklist of things to accomplish for each grade level within the E-Learning resource area. Teachers have provided the required work in this resource, as well as some options for "extra" activities to complete. This will be updated by Sunday evening each week. We hope this is a helpful resource that is easy to access and understand.

Now that Florida is under a stay-at-home order, the school building is closed. You can still reach your classroom teachers through email or REMIND.

We hope you all had a relaxing weekend and please know we are keeping all of our Kingsway students and families in our thoughts during this very uncertain time.

As always, thank you for your continued support and have a nice evening.

Good Afternoon Kingsway Cougars,

This is your Assistant Principal, Mrs. Forbus.

This week of E-Learning is going to be a new experience for all of us.

The first thing I want to make very clear is that we are here to support you. Please reach out to your classroom teachers or myself with any questions or concerns and we will do our best to provide solutions as quickly as possible. Also, if you were unable to make it on Friday to pick up your Chromebook, we will be available tomorrow to provide you with it.
Second, I know you have been receiving tons of communication from both the school and district level. I want to provide a simple and direct list of things to know about E-Learning as we move into the week.

1. Your students should be working on three main programs: iReady (reading and math), myOn/AR, and USA test prep for students in 3rd-5th grade.
2. All programs can be accessed through ClassLink. If you are using a personal device, ClassLink can be accessed on the district website (yourcharlotteschools.net)
3. Your students will complete a diagnostic as soon as they start iReady. The purpose of this diagnostic is to place your students on the proper learning path. Encourage your students to take their time during these diagnostics, and be sure they complete them independently.
4. All student work can be completed whenever is convenient for your family during the day.
5. Although it is not required work, the special area teachers would love for you to visit their website for some awesome E-Learning fun!  Once you are in ClassLink, search for “Special Activities” to find their website.  You will find a special message from Pirate, Ms. Clark's goldfish and this week's Moment of Science for Monday.  In Music, you will find Quaver activities for Tune in Tuesday.  Coach has you moving for Work it Wednesday and updates on the KES Garden.  Watch some of Ms. K's fabulous lessons and Kajun read a poem for Think it Thursdays, and it's Freestyle Fridays with cool Art from Mrs. Petty.
6. If you have technical issues during your E-Learning experiences, please visit our website www.kingswayonline.net and click on the Tech Support links.  One link is above the pictures on the right and another is below the pictures and our calendar under News.  Please fill out the form for a technician to assist you.  Please be patient as the number of requests will likely out number our techs for the first few weeks.

Families, we will be placing a video on our school Facebook page and our school website that we have put together for our students. Please share this with them so they know we are thinking of them as they begin their E-Learning tomorrow.

As always, thank you for your continued support and have a nice evening.

Chromebooks

Good day Families!  If you were unable to pick up a Chromebook today (3/27), please call the school Monday between 8 AM and 3:00 PM so we can make arrangements with you.

Good evening Kingsway Families,

This is your Assistant principal, Mrs. Forbus.

First, I want to say that I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy during this uncertain time.

Spring Break has not been what many of us had planned, but I do hope that you have had some quality time with your families playing board games, watching movies, or of course reading a good book.  We know this is an uneasy time for everyone, so we are hoping that this call brings you some peace of mind and a reminder that we are all in this together.

We wish desperately that we were starting back to school in person this week, but as you know attending school is currently on hold.  Charlotte County Public Schools is working on a virtual learning plan that will be shared with staff and families next week. Virtual learning for our students is set to begin on March 30th.  To facilitate virtual learning, families will need access to technology and the internet. We need to know what resources your family currently has so we can assist if possible. Please be sure that you complete the District survey through the link provided on our school website or on our Facebook page no later than Tuesday. If you do not have resources to be able to complete this survey digitally, please call the KES front office on Monday between 8am and 2 pm to complete it with one of our staff members over the phone.

Charlotte County Schools and Champ’s Cafe have worked hard this week to get a plan in place to provide food to all students 18 and younger on all regular school days.  On Monday, the COW bus will be set up at the Hampton Point Apartment buildings from 12:30 to 1:00 pm. Beginning Tuesday and running through April 15th, breakfast and lunch meals will be available for curbside pickup at various schools from 10 am to 1 pm.  Meals will not be available for pickup on Good Friday, April 10th.  Please find the list of pick up locations on the district website, under "breaking news".

As you know, things are changing on a daily basis.  We will do our best to stay in contact with you as we are informed of changes that impact your families.  If you have not already followed our Kingsway Facebook page please be sure to click the like button! We will have read alouds and other fun activities that will be popping up to our Facebook page next week that will allow us to stay a bit connected in these unique times.

Last, remember that we are a school family and we will get through this.  We expect all of our Cougars, whether they are at home or at school, to Always be Responsible, Always be Respectful, and Always try their BEST!  I can’t wait until I see you all back at school.

As always thank you for your continued support and enjoy the rest of your break!

The students are encouraged to dress with patterns that don’t compliment one another, socks that don’t match, colors that typically aren’t seen together, or overall wacky clothing choices.

This fun event is to help build school spirit while supporting a
love of literacy.

We hope you all have had a restful weekend.

As always, thank you for your continued support and have a nice evening.

Good Evening Kingsway Cougars,

This is your Assistant Principal, Mrs. Forbus calling with important reminders.

Families, school doors open at 8:00 am. Students SHOULD NOT be dropped off any earlier than this as there are not staff members on campus assigned to watch children in the front of the school. Class begins at 8:40 am for students. If they are not in the front doors of the school by this time, you must walk your child into the school and sign them in as they are tardy. If your child eats breakfast at school in the mornings they should arrive NO LATER than 8:30 so they have time to eat and get to class on time. Our goal is to get our students to class on time every day so they are not missing any instructional time:)

Over the next week, Charlotte County Public School's parent notification system will be calling you between 6 and 9 PM to survey your family on whether you would recommend your child's school to another parent. We survey our parents every year asking them to rate their child's school. If you have multiple students attending different schools, you will receive a call from each school. Please take the time to participate in this quick one question survey.

Friday evening from 6:00 - 7:30 is our first 3rd -5th grade dance for the school year. Students must turn in their permission slips and $10 by Wednesday if they would like to attend.

We hope you all have had a fun weekend!

As always, thank you for your continued support and have a nice evening.  :)

Controlled Open Enrollment is Right Around the Corner!

This is a friendly reminder from Dr. Desjardins, Executive Director of School Support Services for Charlotte County Public Schools, alerting parents that the months of February and March are designated as the school district’s controlled open enrollment window (school choice).  During these months, parents and guardians may select a school in our district other than their child’s assigned geographic school for the upcoming 2019-20 school year as long as that school is not closed due to being at capacity enrollment. If a school is “open” to reassignments, it is important to note that your child is not necessarily guaranteed a spot at that location. If there are more reassignment requests for a particular school than available seats, then the district will use a random lottery to determine which students will be allowed to attend that school. If a random lottery is needed, it will be conducted during the first two weeks of April.

Any student who is currently on reassignment to a school other than his or her assigned geographic school is no longer required to renew his or her reassignment every year. Your student will remain on that school’s roster until your student has completed the highest grade level offered at that school (5th grade for elementary school and 8th grade for middle school). Out-of-County residents no longer need to renew their reassignment application each year they wish for their student to attend a Charlotte County Public School unless they decide to change the school their student is currently attending.

Reassignment forms are available at any Charlotte County Public School, Charlotte County Public Schools Murdock Center, or on the web at www.yourcharlotteschools.net.  A complete listing of schools that are at capacity (closed to reassignments) is also available on the school district’s website. If you decide to select a school other than your child’s assigned geographic school, be careful to research the special conditions such as athletic eligibility that are attached to reassignment obligations. Transportation is not provided for students who have obtained a reassignment. Out-of-County students no longer need to obtain a signature (release) from their county of residence.

Parents or guardians who have any additional questions may call 941-255-0808, extension 3005.

I hope you have all had a fun-filled three day weekend.

I am calling with a few reminders for the upcoming week.

We are asking that you ALL please complete the Title I Survey that came home with your students last week. Do not worry if you are unable to find the sheet, you can also find the link to this on our school website or on our Facebook page.

Parents, if your students eat breakfast at Kingsway before going to class, please be sure that they are arriving to school by 8:40. This gives students enough time to eat breakfast and get to class on time.

On Wednesday (January 23rd) we will have a Code Red Drill. During this drill some students will be practicing getting into the building as quickly as possible as if there is danger outside of the building. The rest of the classes will practice a regular lock down in their classrooms.  Parents please talk to your students about the importance of paying attention during these drills and remind them that it is only practice. Deputy Morales will be supervising this drill to ensure accuracy and student safety.

On Thursday (January 24th) it is the 100th DAY OF SCHOOL:)

Parents of 3rd -5th graders we are hosting our FSA parent presentation on Friday at 9:00 am. This is an opportunity for you to come and learn about FSA testing and what to expect for your students.

Phone Message Sent December 2nd

Good Evening Kingsway Families,

This is your assistant principal, Ms. Moradian.

I do not have any important reminder for this week.

I would however like to remind everyone of a few school based procedures we have a Kingsway.

We ask that students DO NOT get dropped off at the school before 8:00 am unless they attend our before school program. There are no staff members in the front area until then, and student safety is always a top priority.

Families, when you visit students at Kingsway during lunch we ask that only your students joins you in the family dining area. We ask that you do not share any food products with other students in the cafeteria as we have students with various allergies. We also ask that you do not send sweets or baked goods for celebrations. Teachers are allotted a certain amount of days each year to have these types of goodies for their classroom and will notify you when they would like for you to send them in.

As I'm sure you have noticed... We have a new fence around the perimeter of our school. This is another step the district has taken in ensuring school safety. With the new fence will come some slight changes in dismissal of biker/walker students. We will notify you with exact details once the fence is complete. In the meantime we would like to ask that parents use the parent pick-up lines as they should be rather than parking cars on the sides of the school and having students walk across streets to get into vehicles. Once again, we think first of student safety, and traffic is heavy around the school during this time.

I hope you all had a restful weekend.

As always, thank you for your continued support and have a great night.

Good Evening Kingsway Families:)

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving Break.

The only important reminder for the upcoming week is that we have a CODE RED DRILL on Tuesday.

Parents, We will be practicing evacuating the cafeteria with our kindergarten and first grade students for this drill. We ask that you please talk to your children, explain that we are only practicing, and the importance of following directions and remaining quiet during the drill. Our school resource officer, Deputy Morales will be supervising this drill and directing all staff and students. Students will only evacuate to the bus loop for the purpose of the drill. PLEASE REMEMBER, in the case of a real CODE RED evacuation, our family reunification site is the Herald Rec Center.

Thank You all for your continued support, and have a great evening.

Good Evening Kingsway Cougars,

This is your Assistant Principal, Ms. Moradian.

Heads Up!!! This message contains IMPORTANT reminders and information.

Your students received their prizes and enjoyed their party today for selling Otis Spunkmeyer Cookies! Thanks to ALL of YOU, this fundraiser was a HUGE success!

Students have NO SCHOOL tomorrow, Tuesday (November 6th).

Wednesday is Dress Like a Cow Day. Students should come to FRE Wednesday morning to see the Chic-Fil-A Cow, earn a surprise for dressing like a cow, and most importantly, CHECK OUT SOME GOOD BOOKS!

Our Kingsway Fall Festival is this Friday evening at 6:00. We encourage all of our families to come celebrate this annual event. There are games to be played, prizes to be won, and memories to be made.

Parents, Grandparents and Guardians of Kingsway Elementary School Students. This part of my call is to remind you of our upcoming election day tomorrow, November 6th, when, among other important decisions you will make about our County, State, and Nation, you will consider a referendum that would provide a much-needed operational millage for our schools. Because you have a personal and unique view of our school through your child’s experience, you possess daily parental information about our programs and needs.

If passed, millage-dollars will be dedicated to providing a more stable and improved program of instruction for OUR children. An increase in instructional time, improvement in lagging teacher and staff wages, more effective and dynamic programming in career tech and in reading, removal of pay-for-play fees in activities and athletics, and bolstered school security are among the expected changes that will occur for OUR children at Kingsway.

Please consider this ballot question carefully: the quality of Kingsway, of our school district, and of our academic and co-curricular opportunities for children depends on our votes. All of us who live in Charlotte County share in the responsibility of providing generational school support to our children as we prepare them for their futures and our own. Thank you for listening to this message. Thank you for voting on November 6th!

As always, thank you for your continued support, and have a wonderful evening.

Good Evening Kingsway Families,

This is your Assistant Principal, Ms. Moradian.

I am calling with a few important messages.

Quarter 1 Report Cards will be coming home with your students this week!

Picture retakes are this TUESDAY (October 30th).

Halloween is Wednesday evening. Students, stay with your friends and near an adult, and remember to wear reflective items so you can be seen when it gets dark.

Parents,

Tomorrow we will be conducting our 3rd Code Red Drill. We notified all students during the morning announcements last week of the upcoming drill. In order to be best prepared for a real emergency, we will practice locking down or evacuating for various situations during each Code Red drill. Tomorrow, some of our 2nd-5th grade students will be practicing evacuating from the cafeteria. They will evacuate onto the bus loop, teachers will conduct a head count, and once the drill is complete all students will return to class. In the event of a REAL school evacuation due to code red or active shooter situation, our students and staff would evacuate and report to the herald rec center for family reunification. Please talk to your students about the importance of remaining calm, the importance of practicing, and remind them that it is only a drill. Our school Resource Officer (Deputy Morales) will be present to supervise this drill and assist students and staff.

I hope you have all had a wonderful weekend.  :-)

As always, thank you for your continued support, and have a great evening.

The vocab parade is October 26th, 2018 at 9:15 AM. Letters are going home.

Announcing our 3rd annual Kingsway Vocabulary Parade…

Our Kingsway Vocabulary Parade is a wonderful way to celebrate a love of words and reading.  Our vocabulary parade also provides a fun and academic focus for dressing up in creative costumes.  Each student selects a word that becomes a costume.  Put your thinking caps on!  How could a costume represent an ATOM? POROUS? Or ZIGZAG?  From A to Z, students can consider the entire dictionary as possible wardrobe choices.

When planning a costume students should think of a word that would have an interesting costume design.  Think about unusual words that others may not already know.  Consider recycling items from around your home to make a creative homemade costume.  Items can include: boxes, poster board, hats, paper bags, fabric, tin foil, etc.  Remember to make a large card or sign with the chosen vocabulary word on it, so others will know which word is represented in your costume.  You can carry the word, make a headband or hat, or have it as part of your costume.  Your word just needs to be visible so others can read it! Please do not include any weapons, sharp objects, or dangerous materials in your costume.

Remember to bring your costume to school with you on the day of the parade,  October 26th, 2018! A parent viewing area will be available after checking in with the front office. A few rules….

* Wear appropriate footwear since children will be going up and down stairs.

* No play weapons such as guns, knives, nun chucks, etc.

* No makeup.

For inspiration in creating your costume, there are lots of great ideas online.

Check out Pinterest.com and type vocabulary parade into the search box.

Thank you for helping us make vocabulary instruction into a Parade of Words!

Hello Parents and Guardians of Charlotte County Public School students!  This is Terri Whitacre, director of Champ's Cafe, calling to inform you that your child's school offers free meals to all students this school year.  Thanks to a USDA program, free breakfast and free lunch are available to your child each school day.  No applications are required.  Students are welcomed to select food items comprising the entire meal or just 3 food items, one of which must be a fruit or vegetable.  Would you please encourage your child to enjoy a free breakfast and free lunch at their school this year?  Your child may even bring a lunch from home and enhance it by selecting 3 or more food items.  Although meals are free, students may purchase healthy Smart Snacks with cash or by spending money on their account.  If a student has a negative balance, they are not permitted to by ala carte food items. Your child's account balance can be viewed via FOCUS and via PayPAMS at no charge. Feel free to call my office with any questions you may have at 941-575-5400.  I wish your student a successful school year, full of healthy meals from Champ's Cafe!

Midway Construction Update

 Message Sent March 22, 2018:

To the families of Charlotte County Schools and our community,

We continue to share in the nation’s collective grief following the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Student safety is essential. Charlotte County Schools, in partnership with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office and Punta Gorda Police Department, have established extensive school safety procedures and have reviewed current protocol to ensure effectiveness and to authorize additional action, if necessary.

Actions we are taking to keep your child safe

Safety is our top priority. We work to ensure that our buildings are as safe as possible. Safety and security audits for each of our schools are conducted annually and consistently to prioritize the safety needs of each school.

The most important action we take to protect student safety is to create a sense of welcome and belonging for our students.  However, here are just some of the additional safety precautions we have in place at schools throughout the district:

  • Updating school safety plans each year
  • Staffing every one of our elementary, middle and high schools with a School Resource Officer
  • Holding emergency drills, including lockdowns and evacuations
  • Training staff and students on how to respond in emergency situations
  • Requiring mandatory ID badges for staff
  • Limiting school access to one point-of-entry during school hours
  • Utilizing a buzzer system which provides school office staff some time to verify a visitor’s identity before allowing entrance into the main part of the campus
  • Monitoring school hallways with security cameras
  • Staffing our high schools with at least one security specialist
  • Joint training with the command staff of both the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office and the Punta Gorda Police Department
  • Analyzing thorough assessments of the “hard scape” of school buildings to improve and enforce school safety

Actions families can take

Families play an important role in helping our schools remain safe. We need your vigilance to ensure that any safety concern is reported immediately. If you or your child see something, say something. Call your school’s administrator, a school district official, or if it is an emergency – call 911 immediately.

Here are some other suggestions of action you can take:

  • Discuss school safety with your children while acknowledging the issue that is gripping our nation
  • Stay connected and monitor your student’s social media activities
  • Follow the law and lock any firearms in an approved storage component or locker
  • Ensure your children do not have access to firearms while visiting other homes

We believe that students should report to school ready and able to develop their love of learning while planning and preparing for their future without the fear or worry that their school may be the scene of the next national tragedy.

Finally, after extensive conversations among the Charlotte School District, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office and the Punta Gorda Police Department, we believe the best avenue to keep our students as safe as possible in school is not to arm teachers but rather to staff the schools with the needed additional School Resource Officers and mental health professionals.  Charlotte County Schools will not be arming their teachers.  Charlotte County Schools and local law enforcement will continue to work together to keep our students and school community safe.
