  • How to Make the Most of Your Health Savings Accounts (HSA)

Posted by Lori Leutwyler on 2/11/2019

What is a Health Savings Account (HSA)?

    • An HSA is a useful tool that may only be used by participants who are covered by a qualified High Deductible Health Plan. An HSA is similar to an IRA as it belongs to the individual and is portable.

Why should I add money to my HSA?

    • Funds added to an HSA are contributed pre-tax. The funds that you or your employer contribute to an HSA are yours until you use them. These funds can be built up over time and can be used to pay for:
      • Qualified medical expenses
      • COBRA continuation coverage premiums
      • Premiums for health coverage while an individual is receiving unemployment compensation
      • Medicare Part A or Part B premiums (for individuals over age 65)
      • Medicare HMO premiums (for individuals over age 65)
      • Premiums for employer-sponsored retiree health insurance (for individuals over age 65)

Who is eligible for an HSA?

    • Anyone enrolled in a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) who is NOT covered by any other health coverage; NOT enrolled in Medicare, TRICARE or TRICARE for Life; have NOT received Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits within the past three months, except for preventive care. If you are a veteran with a disability rating from the VA, this exclusion does not apply; NOT be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return.

Why didn't I know about HSAs sooner?

    • CCPS has only had HDHPs for plan year 2018 and 2019. So that is why you are only learning about this benefit now.

If you would like to talk more about HSAs and/or add funds to your HSA email Lori.Leutwyler@yourcharlotteschools.net.
