Degrees and Certifications:

Mrs. Southwell

Melissa Southwell first joined Vineland Elementary School as a 2nd grade student. After college, she returned and became part of our teaching staff. She is starting her 18th year, having taught first, second, and fifth grades at VES during that time. This year Mrs. Southwell is teaching in the same classroom that was her 5th grade classroom back in 1992! Talk about life coming full circle! Mrs. Southwell has always loved learning and helping others, especially children. She hopes to make a positive and lasting impression in the lives of her students.

Although born in Toms River, New Jersey, Melissa has resided in Englewood since 1989. She received her Bachelors Degree in Pre-K/Primary/Elementary from Florida Southern College. In 2008, she attained her National Board certification in Early Childhood Education. She has her Reading K-12 and ESOL endorsements and is currently working on attaining her GIfted Endorsement.

When not at school, Mrs. Southwell is devoted to her family. She has been married for 15 years to “Coach” Southwell, a teacher and head football coach at Lemon Bay High School. They have a 11 year old daughter, Summer, who is heading to middle school this year, and a 7 year old son, Sawyer, who is in second grade. Our 3 year old yellow lab, Skipper, completes the family. Mrs. Southwell enjoys all things having to do with the water. She was a competitive swimmer through college. She still enjoys swimming, and loves to boat, fish, and relax/read on the beach whenever possible. This year is a milestone birthday for Mrs. Southwell, so she decided to train for and compete in a triathlon!

Personal mission statement: I will strive to lead a loving and positive learning environment, where all students are encouraged to better themselves in every way, and develop an enthusiasm for learning math and science!
