Substance Use & Abuse Health Education

  • This rule was approved by the State Board of Education on August 21, 2019.  It requires school districts to annually provide instruction to students in grades K-12 related to youth substance use and abuse health education. The School Support and Learning Divisions have collaborated with Drug Free Charlotte County (DFCC) to implement this rule.  The developmentally appropriate implementation plan is as follows:


    Kindergarten: Medication Safety

    First Grade: Healthy Choices/Medication Safety

    Second Grade: Vision Boarding (education on brain development & impact of drugs/alcohol)

    Third Grade: Tobacco/E-Cigs/Vaping/Juuls

    Fourth Grade: Whole brain science & how substances impact

    Fifth Grade: Media Literacy (re: substance use and abuse)

    Middle School:

    Just the Facts (Vaping/Alcohol/Marijuana)

    High School:

    Night Vision Presentation by the National Guard (Drugs & Alcohol)
