Substance Use & Abuse Health Education

  • This rule was approved by the State Board of Education on August 21, 2019.  It requires school districts to annually provide instruction to students in grades K-12 related to youth substance use and abuse health education. The School Support and Learning Divisions have collaborated with Drug Free Charlotte County (DFCC) and the Department of Health (DOH) to implement this rule.  The developmentally appropriate implementation plan is as follows:

    Elementary:

    Kindergarten: Medication Safety: Good Choice/Bad Choice

    First Grade: Medication Safety

    Second Grade: Negative Effects of Smoking on the Body

    Third Grade: Under Peer Influence: What would you do?

    Fourth Grade: Media Literacy (re: substance use and abuse)

    Fifth Grade: Medication Safety

    Middle School:

    Just the Facts (Vaping/Alcohol/Marijuana)

    High School:

    Everfi Prescription Drug Safety
