INTRODUCTION

Here's an opportunity for you to publish your own news flash concerning an event or person that you feel to be important or interesting in Black History. You will create a Black History News Flash Poster. Your News Flash Poster will contain the answers to the 5 W's & H, basic to objective journalistic reporting.  By breaking up each event or person into the 5 W's and H, you will "FLASH" before your readers' eyes the important information you have chosen for your Black History News Flash Poster.

 

MULTI -TASKING STEPS

1. Open Internet Explorer and visit the research links found below.

Once you have chosen the person or event, you begin to answer the 5 W's & H Questions by inserting them into your Microsoft Publisher document in order from what you consider the most important to least important. Don't worry if any of your 5 W's & H contain parts of other W's & H.

THE 5 W's & H-Specific Details that television and newspaper

                           journalists use to report the news

 

Who?:

The person or group you are reporting about. Include specific descriptive details that tell what you feel is important about the person or group. For example: WHO?-Carter G. Woodson was a Black activist, educator, and writer.

 

What?:

The most important thing(s) that you feel has happened to the person or group, or what the person or group has done that causes the event to become historical news. Example: WHAT?-Woodson founded Black History Week which later became Black History Month.

Where?:

Where the important event(s) mainly took place. Be as specific as possible. There may be more than one place. Example: WHERE?-Woodson was the 2nd Black American to receive a Doctorate Degree from Harvard University in Massachusetts. He wrote most of his essays in Washington, D.C.

 

Why?:

The reasons for the person's actions or the reasons the event(s) occurred. If the reasons are not stated, you may have to provide your own opinion based on all the other information. If you do express your opinion make sure that you report it as your own opinion. Example: WHY?- In my opinion, Woodson founded Black History Week and wrote about Black History to make Americans more aware of Black History and culture.

 

When?:

Includes important dates which may include birth, death, when important events occurred. Example: WHEN?-Black History Week began in 1926. In the early 1900's Woodson was a Black activist. In the 1976 Black History Month first began. Woodson died in 1950.

 

How?:

Includes strategies methods, or sometimes lesser events that caused the important events to occur. Example: HOW?-To improve Black awareness Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Afro-American History Inc. in 1915. In 1916 he founded the Journal of Negro History. In 1917 Woodson wrote the Education of the American Negro Prior to 1861.
